Biography
The Georgians Quartet is celebrating over 70 years in gospel music. W.L. "Smiling Mac" McGuyrt formed the Georgians Quartet in 1954. Prior to that, he was the manager for his group, the Stamps Melody, who was associated with the national gospel music company, Stamps Music Company located in Dallas, Texas. Being trained by the parent company, while performing with his groups, he would hold 3 week shape note singing schools nightly at churches in southern Georgia and northern Florida.
His youngest son, Calvin McGuyrt, began singing with his group at the age of 12 before his voice changed, and continued throughout the years. Now in his 80's, Calvin has seen many changes, not only personnel, but also in style of music. Their strong commitment to ministry has always been the top priority in their music. The quartet has mostly been a male group during the years with just a couple of exceptions. After the retirement of his late father, Calvin took over the reigns of the group and God has been faithful to bless them.
The Georgians Quartet has toured from Florida to New Mexico and as far north as Canada. They have recorded over 30 albums and CD's over the years, with three songs making the Top 40 charts. The Georgians Quartet was voted the top male quartet for the Southeastern Southern Gospel Music Conference which covers 12 states. This award is voted on by fans online each year. Calvin writes about ninety percent of their songs and the group has recorded over 100 of his songs. The current group consists of Kevin Parten, Evan Minix, Chad Hall, Ted Lyttle, and Calvin McGuyrt.
